Vinotopia Maps on Google Earth.

Google Earth is around since a number of years and regularly new high-resolution pictures become available, which allow you to see a lot of detail. This is actually an interesting way to explore wine regions from the air. A perfect example are the beautifully arranged vineyards in the Mosel region.

But what vineyards  are you actually looking at? Wouldn't it be easier if some extra information was available to guide you? That's what you get with Vinotopia Maps: semi-transparent detailed maps of wine regions which are superimposed on top of Google Earth satellite pics.

I started out with the 'mother of all terroirs': Burgundy - more specifically the Côte de Nuits. This is a region where the different vineyards truly determine the character of a wine. And it is a region for which hi-res Google Earth pictures are available (unlike e.g. the Côte de Beaune). And thanks to Bill Nanson's wonderful site (www.burgundy-report.com) and Kobrand Educational good digital maps were easy to find.

How does it work?

  • First you need to install Google Earth. If you do not have it yet, please click the big green button in the upper left corner to go to Google's website, and follow  the download/install instructions. It is really straightforward, and of course completely free.
  • Next you click on one of the wine maps in the left hand column (e.g. Chambolle Musigny). This will start the download of a Google Earth kml file, which will guide you automatically to the right spot on the planet in Google Earth. You will also see the overlay map appearing, like in the screen shots above.
  • You can always display or hide the overlay map by checking it in the left hand column of Google Earth. Please refer to the Google Earth help information if necessary.

Next up are detailed maps of some Burgundy Grand Cru's, but can you help me find good maps of Bordeaux, Napa, Mosel, Piemonte...? Your input is truly appreciated! All reactions are welcome at info@vinotopia.be. Have fun with Google Earth and Vinotopia Maps!
