The red 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Classique was bottled in March, 1997, and will be released in November, 1997. An excellent wine, it offers up a stylish, lead pencil, vanillin, black currant-scented nose, medium to full body, admirable structure and tannin, spicy, rich fruit, and fine length. It is a classic, elegant, modern-styled Chateauneuf du Pape that should be cellared for 2-3 years and consumed over the following 15. I suspect La Nerthe will make even greater wine, but there is no reason to complain about the quality emanating from this, Chateauneuf du Pape's most historical estate, and its only grand chateau.

The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape continues to put on weight, and is even better than I predicted from barrel. The wine boasts a dense purple color, followed by a terrific set of aromatics (cassis and prunes). This concentrated, medium-bodied, broadly-textured, low acid sexy wine has a finish that lasts for 25 seconds. It is deeper than the 1996, and possibly longer-lived because it carries more weight and length. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2015.
With the assistance of oenologist Jean-Luc Colombo, Bruno Leroy continues to rebuild this historic property's damaged reputation. The 1994 was outstanding, the 1995 appears to be sensational, and because of a strict selection process, Leroy has turned in one of the superlative performances of the 1996 vintage.

The 1995 remains closed, but promising. Its garnet/plum/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of roasted herbs, black cherries, incense, licorice, iodine, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, structured, and muscular, it is still youthful and exuberant, with plenty of tannin to shed. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2014.

The classic 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape needs 3-4 years of cellaring. It displays a provocative, exotic nose of sausage, pepper, bacon fat, cassis, and kirsch. Super-concentrated, moderately tannic, full-bodied flavors offer additional nuances of truffles, licorice, and ripe black fruits. This is a gorgeously rich, full-bodied, backward 1995 with moderate tannin. It should keep for 15-18 years.

I would not classify 1995 as a great year for Chateauneuf du Pape, although it is certainly excellent, and overall the finest vintage since 1990, but you would never know that by tasting Andre Brunel's sumptuous 1995s. The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape is a precocious, medium to full-bodied, lush, layered, complex wine offering up abundant quantities of sweet black cherry and kirsch fruit in a spicy, compelling bouquet. This multi-dimensional, low acid wine displays plenty of earth, smoke, and truffle notes to accompany the kirsch, plum, and prune-like fruit. Sweet and rich in the mouth, with an explosive finish, it should drink well for 12-15 years.

As I indicated last year, as well as in my new book on the Rhone, Janasse's 1995s are brilliant wines. The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin exhibits a denser ruby/purple color than the Cuvee Classique, a black raspberry-scented nose, more restraint, and a closed, tannic style. Full-bodied, with good flesh, this wine needs 1-2 years of cellaring. Long, textured, and well-defined, it will have a plateau of maturity between 2000-2015. These are impeccably made offerings from one of the finest estates in Chateauneuf du Pape.

The 1995 Cuvee Reservee exhibits an opaque black/purple color, and extraordinary rich, intense aromas of smoke, black raspberries, kirsch, and spice. Exceptionally full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, and a thick, rich, expansive mid-palate, this superbly concentrated wine appears to be a worthy rival to this estate's phenomenal 1989 and 1990. Interestingly, the average alcohol level achieved by Domaine du Pegau in 1995 was 14.5-15.5%. This is a blockbuster Chateauneuf du Pape. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020. Last tasted 6/96.

The classic 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape will require discipline. Like most top vintages of Beaucastel, a decade of patience will be warranted before this wine will be enjoyable to drink. Given how tight and closed the 1993 and 1994 are, it is the rare vintage of Beaucastel (1989, 1990, and 1995) that is accessible in its youth, yet they will remain capable of aging for 20-25 years. In some ways, proprietors Francois and Jean-Pierre Perrin might be accused of trying to make the wine too long-lived, as if this is the primary merit to a great red wine. The 1995 will have three decades of longevity, but it will not be approachable before 2006. It exhibits a deep dark ruby/purple color, and a provocative (probably controversial) aromatic profile of animal fur, tar, truffles, black cherries, cassis, licorice, and minerals. A medium to full-bodied wine, with a boatload of tannin, considerable grip and structure, and a weighty feel in the mouth, this appears to be a classic vin de garde made in the style of the 1978 Beaucastel (which is still not close to full maturity). Prospective purchasers over the age of forty should be buying this wine for their children.

1995 was a very good, but firmly structured, tannic vintage for nearly all Chateauneuf du Pape producers. The wines do not display the generosity of the 1998s or 2000s, but the finest examples are admirably concentrated. Clos des Papes’ closed, spicy 1995 exhibits more animal-like notes than the sweeter, more fruit-dominated vintages of 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001. Nevertheless, it is big, full, and promising, but cellaring is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

I have tasted the terrific 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape five times since bottling, and it gets better with each tasting, with one exception. A bottle purchased from a retailer who had bought it in the grey market tasted decidedly less intense. Whether it was a different cuvee from Europe or just an off bottle, I do not know. I am still convinced it is as profound as the 1990, and possibly the best wine made at this estate since the 1978. It possesses a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a sensational nose of pepper, roasted herbs, smoked meats, cassis, and black cherries. On the palate, this backward wine displays layers of concentrated ripe fruit, with enough acidity and tannin to provide definition. This is an extraordinary, powerful, intensely-flavored Chateauneuf du Pape with awesome aging potential. It will be delicious after another 2-3 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20 years. Wow!
This extraordinary estate is enjoying an even higher level of quality now that proprietor Paul Avril has the full-time assistance of his son, Vincent. Most Clos des Papes require some aging as there has been a tendency over the last decade to increase the percentage of Mourvedre (now about 20%) in the final blend.

The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes (44% Grenache, 28% Mourvedre, and 28% Syrah; 19,000 bottles produced) is just being released. The wine is performing even better than I suggested in issue #113. It boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as a super nose of new saddle leather, prunes, wood fire, spice, cassis, and kirsch. Full-bodied and dense, with superb concentration and purity, this wine is approachable, but should evolve and improve for another 7-8 years; it will last for 15 or more.

1995 was a powerful vintage for Brunel. The Cuvee Centenaire remains a young, promising wine offering notes of licorice, cedar, vanilla, and sweet black currant/cherry fruit presented in a full-bodied, virile style. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.
From this impeccably run estate, Andre Brunel produces 7,000 cases of a traditionally made regular Chateauneuf du Pape, and, when possible, about 500 cases of Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire. The Cuvee Centenaire emerges from 114-year old Grenache vines (about 80-85% of the blend), which is combined with younger-vine Syrah and Mourvedre. Approximately half of the blend spends time in new oak casks, and half in neutral foudres or vats. Brunel, who is one of the most articulate spokespersons of Chateauneuf du Pape, continues to fine tune his winemaking, always trying to enhance the fruit and texture. That has been apparent over recent vintages, although some of the old classics are not to be missed.

The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac is a fragrant wine with a dense purple color, and a sensational Provencal nose of olives, jammy black cherries and raspberries, roasted herbs, and pepper. Extremely dense and huge in the mouth, with massive body, glycerin, and tannin, this powerful Chateauneuf du Pape requires cellaring. Anticipated maturity for this luxury cuvee: 2000-2020.

The opaque purple-colored 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations could, aromatically speaking, pass for a top first or second-growth Medoc. Lead pencil, pain grille, and cassis aromas jump from the glass. With airing more jammy black cherry and pepper notes emerge. The wine is fabulously rich and full-bodied, and intentionally made in an international style that downplays the typicity of the appellation. This profound, layered wine possesses awesome richness and length, as well as 20+ years of aging potential. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020.
The Brunel family has been making terrific Chateauneuf du Pape over the last decade, and both 1995 cuvees are very strong efforts. I was unable to taste the 1996s.

The 1995 is spectacular. When Emmanuel Reynaud said it was evolving quickly, in essence repudiating this vintage, I immediately drank two bottles of this glorious elixir. It does not reveal the over-ripeness of the 1990, bringing to mind a hypothetical blend of the great 1989 and 1978. Deeply-colored and still young, with black currant/creme de cassis-like characteristics, huge body, yet great structure and delineation, this is a classic Rayas that is totally different than the 1990. It should continue to improve in the bottle and may merit an even higher score. While it can be drunk now, it will be even better with 3-4 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.

A tiny crop of only 12-15 hectoliters per hectare, and less than 1,000 cases have made this one of the rarest, most difficult to obtain Rayas vintages. While the 1995 is evolving beautifully, it is not yet ready for prime time drinking. The color remains a dense ruby with purple nuances. The wine has that degree of over-ripeness allied to opulence, and a sumptuous texture that make this wine so striking.
Notes of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, minerals, spice, and flowers can be found in this exceptionally full-bodied, powerful, layered wine. Despite its massiveness, there is a sense of elegance, delineation, and balance. The abundant tannin has become sweeter and better integrated. This is certainly a complete and long-lived Rayas and should be uncommonly ageworthy. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020

The 1995 remains tight, backward, and far less evolved than the 1998. The dense inky purple color is accompanied by a floral, blueberry, mineral, and licorice-dominated bouquet. Huge and formidably endowed, but closed, tannic, and backward, it will be at its apogee between 2010-2030.

The two limited cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin are spectacular in both 1994 and 1995, but each will require 10-15 years of cellaring. Less than 300 cases were made in each vintage. The textbook blend of 70% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and 5% Counoise was utilized in 1989, 1990, and 1994, but in 1995, the Mourvedre component was reduced, with the amount of Counoise and Syrah increased significantly. The 1995 reveals more of an aged beef, smoked duck-like component, no doubt because of the higher percentage of Counoise and Muscardin. Although there is less Mourvedre in this cuvee, it still possesses the massive richness, opaque purple color, and sweet, earthy fruit that oozes over the palate with extraordinary intensity and purity. The change in the 1995's blend gives the wine a more spice-driven, animal character, with the distinctive aged beef/Asian spice/smoked duck characteristics more exaggerated. This wine needs 12-15 years of cellaring, and should last 40-50 years. It is a modern-day classic. No Hommage cuvee was produced in 1996.

Although the 1995 remains tight and closed, it reveals classic Bonneau characteristics of roasted herbs, beef blood, cherries, cassis, licorice, and earth. These wines often taste as if someone took one of the old Grenache vines, threw it in a Cuisinart, liquified it, added a bit of brandy, and then bottled it. This is classic Chateauneuf du Pape, the likes of which are increasingly difficult to find. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

The profound 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins exhibits a dense saturated plum/garnet color as well as an intense nose of roasted meats, beef blood, plum, cherry, and blackberry liqueur, truffle, and spice box. It is enormously constituted, with massive quantities of fruit, extract, and glycerin. The alcohol must be at least 15%, but it is beautifully integrated and largely hidden by the wine's wealth of fruit and concentration. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2030.
Total production at Bonneau is about 1,500 cases in a good year, but thanks to the insistence of Bonneau's American importer, Alain Junguenet, our country is getting several hundred cases. This is the quintessential artisinal winery, and Henri Bonneau is one of the planet's greatest and most distinctive winemakers.
